High School Basketball Player Saves Opponent Who Collapsed On Court

During a basketball tournament at Mulhall-Orlando High School in Oklahoma earlier this month, Randy Vitales, a 16-year-old sophomore from Dover High School, collapsed from cardiac arrest just three minutes into the game. Magnus Miller, an 18-year-old player from the opposing team and a trained lifeguard, immediately ran to Vitales' aid. Miller used an automated external defibrillator (AED) and guided school staff on performing CPR, actions that firefighters later confirmed "without a shadow of a doubt" saved Vitales' life.

Last week, the two teens met for the first time since the incident, and shared an emotional moment. “You saved my life,” Vitales told Miller, who responded, “I’ll always be there for you.” The life-saver expressed gratitude and humility, crediting his training for his quick response. Dover Superintendent Jay Wood praised the collective efforts of the coaches, spectators, first responders, and others present, calling them heroes and recognizing their crucial roles in saving the young athlete.

To support Vitales' recovery and honor Miller, the teens’ schools plan to hold a benefit basketball game at the University of Central Oklahoma this week. The game will raise funds for Vitales' hospital costs, with admission by donation and all proceeds going to his family. Miller, the coaches, and first responders will also be honored during the event.
