Exhausted Parents Are Feeding Babies Butter To Help Them Sleep

Sleep-deprived parents who are desperate to get their little ones to sleep will try just about anything to make it happen, including an unusual tactic some swear by. Tired moms and dads are giving their babies a spoonful of butter before bed in a new trend that some claim helps their tots sleep through the night.

Like so many trends, this one originated on TikTok, and those who tried it and say it helped their toddler get a full night’s sleep call it a genius parenting hack. It’s definitely simple - just give the tot a small square or spoonful of butter before putting them down at night - and plenty of parents who have had success with the technique are sharing it on social media. But not everyone has been so lucky, with several exhausted moms revealing it didn’t make a difference in how long their baby slept.

Experts aren’t buying it as a sleep aid and warn that the butter could do more harm than good in some cases. Nutritional therapist Hannah Love says it’s a waste of time and baby nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed reminds parents that social media is full of “misinformation” and that butter isn’t recommended to help babies sleep. Reed points out that butter could even be a choking hazard to tiny tots, so giving it to them on a spoon “is not advisable.”
