Larry Bastian, the country songwriter behind Garth Brooks’ hit “Unanswered Prayers,” passed away earlier this month on April 6th at the age of 90. His son Nick Bastian announced the news in a post online, writing, “The Lord called Dad home last night,” and reflected on Bastian’s influence, saying, “He let us be boys, which seems to be a dying thing these days.” Garth Brooks paid tribute as well, calling Bastian “a cowboy, a poet, and a true friend,” adding, “I love Larry Bastian.” Brooks credited Bastian with giving “Unanswered Prayers” its iconic title, recalling Bastian’s words: “Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.” Brooks added, “This is probably the truest song I have ever been involved with as a writer.” Despite no Grammy nominations, Bastian’s work contributed to 68 platinum albums. Before songwriting, Bastian worked for 15 years in agriculture and later wrote for artists like Reba McEntire, Conway Twitty, and Tammy Wynette.
