The last few years have been incredibly difficult for Lauren Tomlinson, a 33-year-old baker from Rotherham, England. After losing her brother five years ago, she supported both of her parents through life-threatening illnesses, while battling cancer herself. Multiple surgeries left doctors warning she might never have children. But everything changed when Tomlinson experienced a remarkable streak of good luck, changing her life for the better.
Tomlinson’s mom has beaten cancer, her father is recovering from a stroke earlier this year, and her own cancer is in remission. Then a few months ago, she and her partner, Brandon, learned that they’re expecting their first child. And if all that news wasn’t good enough, she also just won 836,114- British Pounds, equal to about $1-million, in the People's Postcode Lottery, splitting the prize with her parents.
Tomlinson runs Tomo's Cakes with her mum from a converted shipping container in their garden. She plans to use her winnings to open a shop in their hometown. She also dreams of traveling after her baby is born. More immediately, the windfall is going to radically change what the family’s Christmas celebrations will look like. Beyond the tangible improvements to their lives, the win has brought back hope and joy to her and her family, marking the start of a brighter chapter in their lives.
