A group of Brooklyn exchange students returning from Jerusalem received an unexpected surprise at Newark Airport when a cab driver mistakenly handed them a lost backpack. The Jewish students opened the bag to find a bunch of expensive items, including a diamond-encrusted pendant, Rolex watches, loose diamonds, and cash. All together, the items in the backpack were worth over $100-thousand!
Unsure of what to do, one student contacted his mother, who said they should call Shmira, a local public safety group. Shmira volunteers quickly started an investigation and were able to track down the backpack’s rightful owner. The man, who works in New York City’s Diamond District, came to the group's Borough Park office to reclaim the bag. According to Shmira director Levi Leifer, the man was visibly relieved and overwhelmed when he saw the contents were all still there.
The students declined a reward, staying true to their values of doing good deeds, or what they call mitzvahs in Hebrew. The bag’s owner was grateful and impressed by the honesty shown by the young men who had made sure the valuable belongings were safely returned.
